Eta Sigma Phi, or HSF, is the national honor society of students of Latin and Greek in colleges and universities. The purposes of the organization are to “develop and promote interest in classical study among the students of colleges and universities; to promote closer fraternal relationship among students who are interested in classical study, including inter-campus relationship; to engage generally in an effort to stimulate interest in classical study, and in the history, art, and literature of ancient Greece and Rome.” Every year, students who have shown exceptional scholarship in Latin and Greek are inducted into the society. Among the great opportunities Eta Sigma Phi offers nationwide are a translation contest, an annual spring convention, and summer scholarship opportunities. In addition, our chapter of Eta Sigma Phi plans to enliven the year with various events.

- In March, we plan on having our annual What to do With a Classics Major? night.
- In April, we will be having a Festival of Dionysus! We would love help planning this event as well, so keep an eye out for emails concerning that as the date approaches.
- And, in May, we will be initiating new members, including honorary faculty members, and we want to start an annual tradition of Greeks versus Romans capture the flag.
Officers 2007-08
Veronica Bean
Veronica is a senior Classics and Political Science double major from Ridgefield, Washington. She spends her free time (what little she has) involved with several organizations on campus, including Democracy Matters, I Am We Are, Habitat for Humanity, and Chi Kappa Chi sorority. You can also see some of her labor in the sets of the plays, as she helps build the sets in her work study position at the Scene Shop for Theatre and Dance. Veronica enjoyed studying the arts and culture of India in Delhi, India last spring. She is thrilled to be the Secretary for Eta Sigma Phi and is incredibly excited for all of the fun events that we will be doing this year.
Stephanie Soiseth
Stephanie is a senior from Anchorage, Alaska majoring in biology and unofficially in
Latin as well. She plans on attending medical school after she graduates to become either a surgeon or an OB/GYN. Two summers ago she spent a month out of rural Alaska with the bears counting the salmon escapement totals on the Igushik river. Stephanie plays the violin in the Gustavus Symphony Orchestra and she likes the color blue.
